Research has an urgent need for large quantities of "skin models", which can be used to determine if products such as creams and soaps, cleaning agents, medicines and adhesive bandages are compatible with skin, or if they instead will lead to irritation or allergic reactions for the consumer. Such test results are seen as more meaningful than those from animal experiments, and can even make such experiments largely superfluous.

Report Estimates Significant Impact Of Widespread Circumcision Effort In Botswana
Botswana"s campaign to circumcise about 500,000 men by 2012 will prevent nearly 70,000 new HIV cases by 2025, according to a report published Thursday in the Journal of the International AIDS Society, AFP/Yahoo! News reports. The government"s national campaign aims to circumcise 460,000 men over the next five years, and the country has begun airing television and radio advertisements to encourage men to be circumcised at local clinics. "Scaling up safe male circumcision has the potential to reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS in Botswana significantly," according to the study. The report puts the estimated cost of the circumcision campaign at about $47 million. A UNAIDS report estimates that the HIV prevalence among pregnant women in Botswana was 43% in 2003, the year that antiretroviral drug access was introduced in the country (AFP/Yahoo! News, 5/28).

RCN Launches New Sexual Health Skills Framework

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) launched new guidance to help sexual and reproductive health nurses to provide the safest, most effective practice. The Safer Health Competences document, available online, outlines the skills that sexual and reproductive health nurses from primary, secondary and community care settings across the UK need to develop in order to provide safe, effective and accountable care to patients. The framework is designed as a template that can be modified to suit local needs. It is intended to help managers and individual practitioners to review their strengths and identify gaps in their skills and abilities to determine specific training and development needs. Dr Peter Carter, Chief Executive and General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, said: "Nurses play a vitally important role in sexual and reproductive healthcare. This guidance will help to inform the commissioning, development and delivery of appropriate education and training to ensure these nurses have the best possible skills to suit the needs of the patients in their local area." The current document has been accredited by the RCN Accreditation Unit and will be valid until November 2011. It reflects new guidance and also includes information on the role of the consultant nurse.
